9-11 may Russian racer Nikolay Karamyshev took part in the second stage of the European Cup, which was held in Slovakia.
Despite some difficulties, the racer from Kursk not just remained on the first place in the overall classification, but has increased its lead over his pursuers. After victories in the first races of the season Nicholay and his Chevrolet Cruze was in the centre of attention. And the young pilot confirmed his status: firstly, he showed the best time in training, and then lost in qualifying only 0,034 second to local hero Mato Homola. However, the second starting position left a good chance for successful performance.
On the night before the race in Bratislava was heavy rain. When it came time to go to the start, the rain had almost stopped, but the asphalt of Slovakia Ring remained wet. In this situation, one of the main things was the choice of tires. Karamyshev and his team decided to bet on rain tires. The first three laps showed that they made the right choice: Nikolay easily overtook Homola and created a big gap.
But the race took an unexpected turn. Because of an accident on the race track came safety car,and the distance between the pilots again decreased, and the warm may sunshine had dried the track. In such conditions, Nicholay had to think about defense. Tires worked worse, opponents pushed, and the pilot lost a number of positions. In the end, Nicholay finished third in its class, the most powerful and fastest TC2T.
In the absolute (in the European Cup participants in several categories at the same time fight on the race track) the pilot did not even make the top ten, because in the second race had to catch up with rivals. Karamyshev quickly and confidently returned in the leading group, where he remained almost to the finish line, when - in his own words, decided to take the risk. The result was a small departure from the track into the gravel while trying to pass. 25-year-old racer has finished the stage in fourth position.
By the sum of points (34) he is ahead of his partner, Ukrainian Igor Skuz (32) and the current champion of Russia Mikhail Grachev (23).
N. Karamyshev: «I can't be happy, because I could not win this time. The main factor was the choice of tires for the first race. There was a large chance that the rain will start falling. By the way, he really went, not even the rain, and a real shower, just a bit later. And so I had to finish the race on very bad tires. In the second race, knowing that the weekend is still difficult, I decided to risk: the success was close, but in this I failed. The main result of the stage that even in this situation, I was able just to strengthen my position in the overall standings - and we understood the setup of the car in high-speed turns, which will be very important at the next stage in Austria.»
The third weekend of the European Cup will take place on the track Salzburgring 23-25 may.
